10 tips for walking well in heels

10 consejos para andar bien con tacones

Ángel Alarcón |

Have you ever looked at a woman just by her gait? You may wear heels every day, you may only wear them occasionally, or you may be wearing them for the first time. The question is simple: do we know how to walk in heels?

Although walking in heels may seem like an easy task, I have bad news: it isn't, especially if you want to do it with grace and elegance. To walk in heels, it's not enough to just wear them; you have to show off your shoes and your body.

Practice and perseverance are always good allies. There are now academies that teach you how to walk in heels in a sensual and elegant way (for example, "Talons Academy" in Paris).

We give you 10 practical tips for walking in heels elegantly.

1. Wear good, quality shoes that don't hurt your feet when you walk. The quality of a shoe often positively influences your walking style.

2. Buy high heels with a soft interior (at Ángel Alarcón we use a shank, a type of sponge placed on the inner sole to cushion the impacts that occur when walking).

3. If you don't want to look like a duck, don't try to land your toe and heel at the same time. You should land your heel first, then your toe—that's how your foot should land.

4. While you are supporting the heel with one foot, the other is lifting off from the tip.

5. Bend your knees slightly when walking, but don't walk with your knees forward.

6. Straight body, straight back, gaze forward and no hopping when you walk, your body only sways from side to side, never up and down.

7. Walk with your heels straight, trying not to bend them. Check if you tend to wear one side of the shoe more than the other, and change the heel cap from time to time.

8. Buy a shoe that fits your size. That is, if a shoe destroys your foot when you try it on, don't buy it. There are many different sizes available; you're sure to find the right one for you (at Ángel Alarcón, we have more than 15 different sizes).

9. Be careful where you walk. Avoid loose soil, grass, or areas with grates or vents in the ground. If you have no choice but to walk in these areas, skip step 1 because you'll have to walk on your toes without putting your heel down, or your heel will sink.

10. If you're walking a long distance or in a hurry, forget the heels. We've often seen girls take off their shoes at weddings, sit down frequently, or move or walk as if they were wearing thumbtacks. If you do this, you've lost all your glamour.
